California Alcohol Class in the Future for Assemblyman Roger Hernández

It has been estimated that for each time a person has been arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) of drugs or alcohol, they probably have driven in an inebriated state more than 300 times without getting caught. Every once in a while you think that some person had two drinks (which is rare for them), drove home and got pulled over.

Do you think that is the case in the following story?

A Southern California state assemblyman apologized Wednesday for his drunken-driving arrest in Concord last month, calling the incident "a huge wake-up call for me.". This according to sfgate.com.

Assemblyman Roger Hernández had a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 percent, the point at which a driver is considered to be drunk, when he was stopped about 2 a.m. March 27th,.

The 46-year-old Hernández, a Democrat from West Covina (Los Angeles County), admitted that when he blew a .08 it was "a huge wake-up call for me. I may have made a poor judgment thinking that I was sober enough to drive after a couple of drinks over the course of an evening. Had I thought I was mentally or physically impaired to drive, I would not have gone behind the wheel of a car," he said.

I always like to give the benefit of the doubt to a first-time offender, however, in my experience as a counselor for an alcohol class I know that most people busted have driven many times without getting caught.

I might consider Hernández an exception. In addition to showing sincere contrite, he wants his conviction to serve as a wake-up call to others who might consider driving after a couple of drinks.

Hopefully he will take an alcohol class and do his best not to make the poor decision tod drive after he has been drinking.
