73-Year-Old Now Headed to Colorado DUI Class?

As a counselor for both in-class and online DUI classes I have heard thousands of excuses for why people chose to drink and drive. As a recovering alcoholic myself I have used hundreds, including the same one by the 73-year-old lady that is the subject of this blog entry.

That say you get wiser with age. That is not the case for a 73-year-old Boulder (Colorado) woman who was arrested on DUI and vehicular assault charges after she clipped a food truck with her SUV, drove into a University of Colorado student eating lunch and then struck the church where she had planned to attend an Alcoholic Anonymous meeting.

It is interesting to note that on a couple of occasions I used that excuse to try and get out of a speeding ticket. One time there were three of us in the back seat drinking (our driver was sober – we were responsible after all) and he told the officer who pulled him over speeding that we were late for our AA meeting. Surprisingly, the excuse worked.

Not so for Boulderite Brenda Geers who was driving her 1998 Toyota 4Runner when she clipped the Cheese Louise food truck parked in the lot before barreling into a table where the victim –18-year-old CU freshman Eric Anderson — was eating lunch. The SUV then ran into the church’s covered entryway. Anderson was transported to Boulder Community Hospital with a punctured lung and numerous broken ribs.

She told officers she was on her way to St. Aiden’s to attend an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. How shameful is that? Maybe she should have been to Colorado DUI Classes also?

I hope she takes a good alcohol class and continues to attend AA meetings. They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. I hope that is not the case for Geers.
